This was my 2nd summit of Hawkins, but from a different way. The first was from Dawson Saddle, over Throop Peak, then to a car shuttle at Islip Saddle. This time, I hiked out and back from Islip Saddle, over Mt. Islip's summit, down to Windy Gap, then to Hawkins, making it about 12 mi. round trip. It was a bit tougher this time. I had a 5 peak plan (17-18 mi. round trip) this day. I wanted to summit Islip, Hawkins, Throop, Burnham, and Baden-Powell. But for some reason, my body was not having it, so I turned back after Hawkins. Omitting Islip, the hike is about 11 mi .round trip and about 2,200' gain from Islip Saddle, but including Islip made the hike a little over 12 mi. with 2,900' gain. The scenery is incredible along the Pacific Crest Trail, weaving in and out of Sugar/Jeffrey Pine and White Fir groves changing to Lodgepole/Limber Pine groves mixed with more White Fir as the elevation rises above 8,200'. There is much evidence of the 2002 Curve Fire along several stretches, with clear views of coast and desert, alternating with lush subalpine conifer forest on north-facing slopes overlooking the Mojave Desert. I passed Mt. Hawkins on PCT, and then doubled back along a small use-trail to the east of the summit towards the summit. There is no cairn, USGS survey marker, nor summit register on the summit.
