4/7/24: Mokoli’i Hawaii style! We got out to Kualoa Point way too late in the afternoon and I had given up on Mokoli’i until next time, so I decided to just play around on the SUP and drink some Big Wave and chill. But a curious thing happened: I just kept paddling. Once I had made it about half way out (20-30 min into the heaviest surf), I knew I could make it at least out that far and it would only be a quarter of the total time getting back. After accomplishing that, I was just as confident that I could make it to landfall at the micro-beach/landing area on the west side. I contemplated the summit attempt while getting a good stretch on and appreciating dry land again. Since I hadn’t planned on actually do this, I had nothing with me but the board shorts I was wearing so it would have to be a Hawaii style attempt. Fortunately it was all pretty smooth sailing to the top and no crazy jagged lava rock! I was able to even hang at the summit for a good 10 min or so before it was really obvious that the sun was now getting close to the ridge line. It only took about 15 min paddling back and I ended up getting that Big Wave for sunset anyway!
