I have to admit that I had my eye on this peak as soon as I saw that it was near the Columbine Campground, where we'd be staying for our Arc Dome hike the next day. It looked simple enough, only about a 500-700' gain. Well, it was simple enough, sort of? After nabbing a good campsite at the Columbine Campground, we drove back out and parked on a side spur road. I'd suggest for anyone else that they drive a bit farther down as there were two turn-offs closer to the saddle of the peak. The peak is fairly thickly brushy-forested, so we aimed for the low saddle and went up the side, which kept us out of the brush except for about 100-200' of distance (and about 50' of elevation). The top of Mahogany Mountain is a small boulder field, so there's some picking your way around and light scrambling. Lots of stair-stepping, but take care because of the amount of plants. The approach to the saddle was a maze of thick sagebrush, but also the most wonderful white low-slung wildflowers just carpeting the ground everywhere. The whole area was thick with wildflowers and the scent hung in the air. We got this done before sunset, and it was beautiful to see into the next valley over from whence we just came. There was also cell signal near the peak, which there was not in the Columbine Campground. A fun little warm-up.
