Luera Peak is on NM State Trust Lands. While maps show several roads accessing the area from the east that's no longer the case. Those roads cross private property and are now closed. Access is off NM-163 (some maps show it as NM-78) between mile markers nine and ten and is marked with a large NM State Trust Land sign which is about 50 feet off the road. This road is not shown on some maps although it does intersect with roads that are. The access road is high clearance 4WD only. Within the first 100 feet of the entrance you will see that first hand when the road heads up a steep hill of rocks. There are some very rough sections further in. Its a little over ten miles to the top of Luera Peak via a road that goes all the way to the top. The highpoint is marked by a cairn which is located near a barbed wire fence no far from the road. I accessed the area from US-60 turning onto NM-52 by the VLA. Then later turned onto NM-163. NM-52 and NM-163 are both graded dirt/gravel roads that are in good condition.
