As far as I can determine, Lone Butte is the 6th highest named summit in Kansas. It is a surprisingly steep mound rising out of the flat Kansas prairie with a yellowish-orange, tall, thin pinnacle rising dramatically into the sky on the west side. My son, Marshall, and I parked on the gravel road on the west side of the butte far enough away to shield it from the view of a farm located about a mile to the northeast. From the road there is a barbed wire fence that has to be crossed, then it is a steep climb (for a Kansas high point) to a broad mesa-like summit plateau with great views in all directions. In the center of the summit plateau was a large cross made of treated fence post logs that had fallen over. We remounted the structure, which was not an easy task on our lofty perch in the Kansas wind. My son and I rated this Kansas high point as our second most favorite of the 13 highest named summits that we climbed in the state.
