A group of us decided to enjoy a weekend at Grace Camp with the idea of hiking HaBaSa one day and MaSyGr the next. As it turns out Mother Nature would only allow us to hike one day by bringing in sleet, freezing rain and high winds for day 2. We hiked in from the garden ~3.4 miles and dropped our gear at Grace camp before making our way toward Slant Rock to begin the up for Haystack. Once past Slant Rock and SSC the topo gains quickly and then the real fun begins. We climbed the few hundred feet to Little Haystack and began the descent to the col before Haystack just as a storm was coming in. By the time we were climbing up Haystack the storm was upon us. From here we descended back to the Basin / Haystack split and made out way the 1.8 miles to Basin, including a nice 900' drop in 3' snow drifts that were recently potholed (ugh!). The summit of Basin took us just over an hour - the snow was blowing harder now and stung our faces as it hit. From here we carefully descending to Saddleback as the back side of Basin was very steep and icy. The trip to Saddleback is a quick mile to the base of the cliffs. by the time we reached the cliffs were were low on daylight and the storm was in full swing. The ascent was hairy and we needed to work as a team to get up safely. Once at the summit we celebrated quickly and then made our way through the 5 miles back to grace camp as quickly as possible to eat some dinner!
