"Hiked up for sunrise, of course, so we set the alarm for 2:45 AM and arrived at the trailhead by 4:30 AM. We moved up the mountain quickly since it was middle of the night, nothing to see but the glow of surrounding headlamps and village lights down in the distance. Reached summit in about an hour and watched the daybreak. Luckily had perfect weather and a colorful sunrise. Coffee and hot chocolate available up there. This is a very popular hike, so lots of people buzzing around but I thought it was cool for the most part because we were all from different parts of the world. Once the day had fully arrived, we made our way around the caldera to see it all. Lots of very hot steam venting out of the volcano. Well on our way down, we passed through a congregation of monkeys hanging around for bananas and other tasty hand outs from hikers. Coming off the mountain several hours before noon made for a great opportunity to head straight for a morning cup of Kopi Luwak, and so we did just that." — jodola • Sep 26, 2023
"A path through thick forest, badly eroded in places. All the locals I met were very surprised I had attempted the climb by myself - but there is no real danger for an experienced hiker" — IsaacParkin • Sep 3, 2023
"Pura Lempuyang, the temple at the bottom of the hill is a busy Bali tourist stop - primarily to get a photo in front of the Gates Of Heaven which frames the volcano Gunung Agung in the background (on a clear day). But 99% of visitors don't go past the first temple. A 2-3 hour quiet loop trail passes 7 other small temples, the highest of which is at the summit of Gunung Bisbis. N.B. You are required to wear a sarong on the trail which you borrow free of charge at Pura Lempuyang" — IsaacParkin • Aug 25, 2023
"Straightforward walk up the besakih trail.
High quality trail, by my New Zealand standards anyway. Only a little exposure hazard at summit by crater. Frequent thunderstorms in the afternoon. 12 hours up and down. 7am to 7pm.
Used a guide, whilst the trail is very safe for solo travel, for cultural and local economic reasons, just played it safe and took one. " — AidanAstwood • May 2, 2023
"Steep challenging badass mountain climb through a dense wet rain forest. All very beautiful though and mid-day sun was just there at the summit waiting for us.
It can rain pretty hard and forest gets really slippery when it does. Don't go unprepared." — ahmadnakib • Jun 26, 2016
