This peak was climbed as part of a traverse of "The Dodds" group of hills. The traverse takes in the higher neighbouring peaks of Great Dodd and Stybarrow Dodd, the area is characterised by sweeping broad grassy ridges and rocky outcrops. White Stones is best approached from the east via Glencoyne Head. Our walk took us along the ridge to Hart Side and Birkett Fell, then dropping steeply down to Dowthwaite Head.
