This approach requires crossing property belonging to the Moore Ranch. I had permission from Alice Moore to cross her land. I started just off Eagle Tail Road which is a county road that runs along the east side of the mountain from north to south. From Eagle Tail road you will see a straight line cut down the east side of the mountain, that's the route I followed. The track start out next to a fence line and ends at the trees where a clearing under the power lines serves as the trail to the summit. This part of the hike is steep with lots of loose rock (scoria) making for treacherous footing especially on the way down. Once you reach the summit area, comm sites will be to your left and right. The site on the left (south) is supposed to be the higher of the two. I didn't see a summit cairn nor the benchmark but was distracted by lots of junk parts and trash lying around. Nice views of the Sangre de Cristo mountains of NM and CO. Getting there: Eagle Tail Mtn is right next to Interstate 25, south of Raton. The Moore ranch is off Road A11, is signed with a big metal sign, Road A53. I-25, exit 446 takes you right by it and continues onto Eagle Tail Road. You can also exit at 435 but it's a longer route.
