A beautiful day to summit Corkscrew Peak. I've driven by it multiple times on trips through or into Death Valley, but had never hiked it before today. The weather is quickly warming up, so we looked for a day with light winds. The weather forecast for Corkscrew Peak has "breezy" or "windy" in the description most days - but not for the day we summited. Ken and I left Vegas at 5 AM and drove straight to the trailhead/pulloff for Corkscrew Peak. Rather than parking at the sign, we parked at a larger pulloff a bit farther down the road. The entire route was well-maintained trail, if a bit steep at times. The views from the summit were incredible - something you get when a peak is literally a mile higher than the valley floor. The day was clear enough that we could see the Sierra Nevada range. A good hike up and down, and a great day. After we hiked Corkscrew, we drove out to the Racetrack Playa to check out the sailing/racing stones.
