HPS directions include two possible ways to get to the starting point, and both include driving on long dirt roads before setting out on foot. My usual go to sites had similar information. However, when looking on Google Maps, I see that a forest road goes from Highway 138 all the way to the summit. This is an established jeep and dirt bike driving route into the mountains. Additionally, since the mileage isn't a deal-breaker, could somebody simply hike the forest road? Since nobody else was giving me this information, I decided to find out for myself.

To reach my starting point, I exited Interstate 15 and drove 3.6 miles east to Cleghorn Road on the right. I'm not sure if the road was signed, but it is a dirt road that has a wide turn out off Highway 138 (for reference, the starting point for Peak 4276 is right across the highway). I got off Highway 138 and parked in the dirt before passing through the gate. At about 8 AM, I started walking up the road. I passed a staging area in a half-mile, which is also a good starting point since the dirt road leading there seemed rather gentle. With the early start, the motorized traffic was nearly zero for the first few miles. By the time I was halfway to Cleghorn, I was starting to give way on the road for passing vehicles. All total, there were about a dozen groups of jeeps or motorcyclists throughout the morning. Since I was the only hiker there, I had the summit of Cleghorn Mountain to myself. When approaching the summit, I had to leave the road and climb over a vehicle barrier fence to then go up a use trail to the top. I found the register, which made the visit official.

The round trip hike to Cleghorn Mountain from Highway 138 is 10 miles. However, I went to another summit down the road that had my interest. This was another 2.2 miles round trip to reach the summit. On top was a surveyors marker that read "Canyon". After visiting both peaks, it was a long walk back to Highway 138, but at least it was downhill!
