This highpoint is within the Valles Caldera National Preserve. All visitors must stop at the Valle Grande Visitor Center to obtain a pass. The park maintains operating hours, meaning it opens at 0800 and closes at 1800. Winter hours are 0900 to 1700. A map provided by the visitor center shows the mountain and the trailhead. While not the highest peak in the preserve its central location provides a vantage point to the caldera, one of only two supervolcanoes in America. Yellowstone is the other.

Much of the mountain is a burn scar so downed timber litters the area. There is a network of old logging roads that does reach the top although deadfall and erosion makes for an obstacle course. Just below the highpoint there is an instrument site.
