How to get there: From US 64, west of Taos, turn onto West Rim road followed by an immediate right (west) on an unsigned east-west gravel road. Maps call it Sheepherders Road. There are several places where a person can start their hike. I like to get close to the summit and have a HC-4WD vehicle and a forest map so I went down Sheepherders Road for about four miles then turned right on an unsigned dirt road. The road will transition into a rough road as you enter the national forest. If you wish to skip the forest road ride then go down Sheepherders Road for three miles and turn right. The road will jog a bit but will take you to the national forest. I have not personally verified this route but there's a trip report on Peakbagger.com.
