According to my GPS app, the fire road only led about a quarter of the way up the mountain. Luckily, it went all the way to the peak of Cave Mountain. I needed this as the morning had been a difficult one of navigating trails and off-trail. Not a bad climb to the top of this small mountain and beautiful views of the surrounding towering peaks greeted me. For some reason, there is a large section of mowed land near the top. However, it afforded an impressive sight of Apple Orchard Mountain, which stood 2,600 feet higher than I did on top of Cave. As a matter of fact, Apple Orchard is the highest mountain along the AT heading north from that point until New Hampshire. BTW...Cave Mountain Lake is not worth the drive, but the peaks are.
