Standard route bike/hike in perfect warm dry conditions with lots of sunshine. The hills were warm, benevolent and welcoming and the heather was in bloom. Lots of happy, friendly people heading out from Linn of Dee on various plans near and far. The ‘crowds’ soon died away as they radiated out into the vast area accessible from here. Beyond the Geldie river crossing I saw only two people, one a fell runner travelling light who quickly overhauled me. These are remote hills. A cooling breeze kept the midges down and stopped me overheating. Away from the good access trails, paths of sorts came and went leaving a fair bit of heather bashing on steep slopes. Green grassy tongues gave best progress. I noted rudimentary shelter at three places 1) Spacious roofed semi-ruin open ‘bothy‘ at 003868 with sign ‘caution dangerous building’ 2) Small roofed poorly windproofed lean-to on the side of Geldie Lodge ruin 3) A one person stone sit shelter (see photo) just west of An Sgarsoch summit set into rocks at 932837 good for respite from N&E winds.
