Take a Downtown line train to Beauty World MRT station and come out of exit B (signs for bus stop 1). Proceed straight ahead up Cheong Chin Nam road, past a line of local bars and restaurants to a pedestrian bridge over a dual carriageway, by the Perce school. Go over this bridge then up Hindhede Drive to the nature reserve entrance (free) and visitor centre which has a nice 3D model of the area The trails are all well marked with rain shelters and map boards dotted around so explore as you wish. Water can be topped up using drinking water fountains by the visitor centre toilets. The paths are all good so trainers are fine for footwear.
The simplest summit route goes up a short steep tarmac road then a flight of steep steps. But the shaded side trails through the forest are much more interesting so instead I’d recommend going via South View path, Cave path (war time tunnels), Catchment Path then Summit Steps. From the summit you can go back down the main road or up the exercise value by adding in the Rengas Path, Dairy Farm Loop and Jungle Fall Path. The are no views at the top but I did see monkeys in the forest. The racket made by the cicadas is impressive too.
By doing ALL the side trails I managed to eke out my elevation gain to a more creditable 450m (quite an achievement in 33 degree tropical heat) before ending with cool down refreshments in one of the bars near Beauty World MRT
