22nd ADK Peak! Another early morning departure from home in order to get an early start on the trail and secure parking at the Garden parking lot. We departed from the trail head at 7:15 am. The first several miles of the Phelps trail from the Garden until the John Brooks Lodge are fairly flat and level and can be traversed relatively quickly. Our pace was slowed slightly on this hike due to mud and wet roots. Continuing on past lean-tos, the trail ascends gradually through the forest crossing many streams. It took several hours to reach the trail head junction leading to Basin. At this point of our journey we were actually already beginning our return trip, despite having not yet climbed any peaks. A rather steep ladder leads the way to the summit. Once you climb the ladder the trail continues onto steeper terrain and quite a bit of steep rock scrambling is required. The peak of Basin provides a great open view of Marcy, Colden, Algonquin, and Haystack. There is a great view along a "stone wall" about .3 miles prior to the summit.
