I did this one all by myself. I left Utsunomiya in my mother’s-in-law car and drove 2 hours north to the Adatara Kogen in Fukushima Prefecture. I spent ¥1200 for a gondola ticket and rode this to the standard trailhead. It was children’s day in Japan so the trail was very crowded but after about 30 minutes of hiking I got ahead of the crowds. The trail took me directly to Adatara-yama, which is one of the 100 famous mountains of Japan. This volcanic nipple was easy class 3 and had great views of Bandai-san and Nishi-Azuma-yama which I climbed just a few months back. The flies began to bug me so I continued north towards my next objective, however en route I noticed a cool looking peak to the west which I felt inclined to visit. As I made my way I walked along a breathtaking caldera with spectacular views down into the crater. Sulphuric gases filled my sinuses giving me a slight headache. I learned the western peak was named after the god Funemyojin. This was probably the best peak of the day. I retraced my steps back along the crater and hiked Yahazumori-san next. This was a gimme. Then I continued to Tetsu-zan which was my first p300 on the day. The flies were annoying once again so I didn’t stop until I reached a breezy spot on the ridge below. My ascent up Minowa-yama was brushy and not so much fun, but it was the tallest peak in the area and a P1.6k. I pushed through overgrown trail to get to the high point as marked on the topo then continued back to a rocky outcropping which was designated as the summit. I had lunch then retraced my steps back to the crater rim, then dropped down a trail that connected back down to the ski resort. Mt Kagoyama was another gimme, and while many of these bonus peaks were not very prominent, they were all named and had nice views. I jogged a bit on my way back, slowing down at times since the trail was muddy in places. I stopped a half mile from the trailhead and took a fully clothed dip in the river then continued my walk out to the car. I drove back to Utsunomiya without incident and even figured out how to get gas at the self serve pump without any help. My only regret was not incorporating Kasho-san into my outing but I wasn’t even aware of its existence until I was on the mountain. I’ve added the red dot to Peakery so maybe the next adventurer can add this to their trip.
