Sean and I hiked out to the tarn in Upper Royal Basin after work. We were the only party camping up there and found our regular spots. With an alpine start the next morning we chossed up to Surprise Basin and started up slushy snow towards the peaks. We decided to climb a class 4 crack on to rock to avoid the loose snow. Rock was fairly solid on the way up to the base of The Arrowhead. It was super intimidating looking at it but it was only 5.6 up the crack. Sean lead it and I followed, the crux was that the rock was icy cold and kinda loose. Gnarly lead for sure. In the register up top we found we were the first party in 15 years to sign it, Only 6 other parties since 92. Pretty stoked on that. After we rappelled down we scrambled to the top of Martin and found some of the best views in the Olympics. Such a cool summit block on Martin. The climb down was pretty straight forward, good rock, climbed into a steep snow gully early and after some careful plunging we had a good glissade down to Surprise Basin. A long hike home that night but what a trip.
