How better to start Christmas Day than with a chilly hike to the summit of Sugarloaf Mountain in Chiricahua National Monument? What a fantastic place! Cool fire lookout structure that's on the register of historic fire lookouts. The old maps are still in there! As is a wooden stool with glass insulators on the feet - imagine sitting in that fire lookout during a thunderstorm, with lighting strikes nearby?! Gorgeous, chilly morning - frost coating everything, a glorious sunrise. Easy trail. Nice cooldown/recovery hike from The Big Loop at 10 miles the day before.
