Approached from westward along the Newton Range after gaining the tops by using the partially reinstated tops track from Lower Arahura hut. Had glorious weather!
Saw two rare rock wren birds about half an hour west of the summit.

Hi glennj, what's the condition of the partially reinstated tops track from Arahura? I'm keen to get up Mt Newton soon. Sounds like I'll need to carry a saw and marking tape? Or does the track manage to get out of the worst of the scrub.

Hello Euan, I haven't been up there for a long time. The track recut was completed but possibly nothing has been done since? The "Permolat" / Remote Huts Westland site may have up to date on the track which starts near Lower Arahura Hut.
