From Cava di Rena, just before the big switchback in the road. (Note that part of the road to the alternative route, via the refuge was closed when I went). First part of the walk (path 821) is in forest and quite well curated. At the second rest area, the forest stops and there is the option to head up along the ridge or join the other path (you can just see another info board in the distance). We chose the latter option, even though the weather was very hot and the area now exposed, we thought this would be more gradual. It was although many trees had fallen along the path, meaning one had to work one's way around them. At a certain point, where there is a large patch of bracken there is the option to join the path along the ridge, this we didn't take, but continued parallel to it at a lower height. At a certain point, when we were underneath the summit where some long gabion walls had been constructed, it was a steep climb to the top. However, on our return we counted our blessings as the ridge climb was steep for a longer period, and although it offered more shade was dicky to descend on due to there being no real path.
Obviously this hill saw some fighting during WWII, most of the evidence of that has gone, although I did see one structure near the top that could well have been one of the German machine gun nests I've seen on pictures. Overall more taxing than I was expecting, but mostly due to the heat.
