Start walking 1400h + Finish 2005h = 6h05, 20.9km, ascent 672m

Torridon-Coulags-Strathcarron on excellent stalkers paths combined with a simple pathless traverse of minor peak Carn Dearg for some views. It’s a fantastic viewpoint on a clear day with interesting rock scenery; you descend down massive inclined ice scoured sandstone slabs peppered with boulders. A minor summit well worth the effort.

Park at Strathcarron station or arrive by train. Two cars not needed for this point-to-point, the key to the logistics being the 702 minibus service leaving Strathcarron station Mon-Sat at 1250h once the afternoon train arrives. Fare £5.20 cash.

Ask the driver to drop you at the start of the hill track at Annat. Enjoyed my packed lunch on the pleasant stony beach here before starting walking. I also had breaks at Coire Fionnaraich (Coulags) bothy and a quick wild swim in a lovely little pool about 300m before the A890. South of this road my route involves a stream crossing and some vague navigation before becoming properly established on the excellent track (which long ago was the main road) to New Kelso along the Carron’s north bank. These minor difficulties can be avoided by road walking west ~1km to the obvious signposted track near a hump backed bridge.
