While much of the hike is on NM State and BLM lands, crossing private property is unavoidable. And since this is elk country avoid hiking it during hunting seasons. It just so happens two large sections of NM State Trust lands cover much of the routing to the peak, which is located on BLM land. When parking off NM-120 try to park on the half mile stretch of NM State land centered on N36.0139, W104.5480. I suggest you look at a map showing land ownership so you can plan routing; CalTopo website so you can stick to public lands as much as possible. From the highway starting point you can't see the highpoint but once you ascend the mesa you will see a series of bumps with the HP being one of them. On the way in I did ascend the Wagon Benchmarker (Peak 7266) which is ten feet shorter. Its more abrupt prominence makes it appear higher.
