A weekend away in Tulbagh at the secret falls campsite (only accessible by 4x4) saw a group of 11 people summit the Klein-Winterhoek Peak. It was a long day out, though the pace was rather leisurely and many sit down breaks were taken. In all the summit and the return to the Secret Falls campsite took around 9 hours.

Once you reach the flats on top of the mountain, behind the campsite, there is no path for the remaining 5km to the summit. Thankfully the vegetation becomes more forgiving the higher you go.
There are a few slabs that need to be traversed as well as some easily negotiated boulders close to the summit. However none of it ever becomes more than a scramble. The gain in elevation for the duration of the hike is around 1500m and the peak itself is currently the highest that I have summited.
The hike to the summit of Klein-Winterhoek Peak is very beautiful with large dropoffs along the ridgelines that one would follow to the summit. The peak is most easily summited from the back (from within the mountain range) as it is found on the edge of the range and has a face with some well known climbs, though they are not climbed very often.

The Peak is part of a range of fold mountains and some of the rock features in the area are really amazing you can clearly see where and how the mountain has folded. It was truly an awesome experience to spend time in this mountain range and I look forward to returning to summit Groot-Winterhoek next.
