Nice backpacking shakedown with my buddy Austin before we head out for the Arizona trail next week. Drove down to gold butte townsite and backpacked down. Wanted to get Bonelli on the way down to the lake, but it was coated in a layer of snow that looked too deep for my liking . Maybe on the way back I thought. Got rattlesnake which was pretty easy and not too far off the road even though I didn’t approach it from the road. Camped down at the Lake right next to Scanlon Hill. Refilled the 5L We each took with us at the lake. Hung out with some burro who gave me some tips on Gold Cross. Got gold cross the next morning which took me a bit longer than I thought (~2.5 hours RT from scanlon hill) which put me behind for also being able to tag Powell while I was down there. Gold cross was beautiful and seeing the colorado river flow into lake mead was awesome. Packed up and left after that, and quick got Gregg peak from scanlon road . This took less than 30 min round trip and is an easy bonus if you are coming down the dugway. Only three entries since 01 on Gregg ! Camped right at LMNRA boundary that day. On our final day coming out , we got crushed by a huge snow squall right after coming up the dugway, and it was probably the worst winter conditions I’ve ever been in for a solid 30 minutes. Luckily it cleared up after that but it killed any chance of bagging anything else on the way back as the entire area had a nice layer of snow now. Overall a very nice trip down in the gold butte area.
