Dec. 29, 2023... Dirt road from highway 178 to the trailhead is in good condition. It took us about an hour to cover that 17 miles mainly because I didn't want to kick up rocks and damage anything on the underside of my car (2006 Honda Pilot 4WD SUV) that is 17 years old and has about 239000 miles on it. It is missing the bottom cover under the engine that I lost by driving faster during another trip, on similar (slightly worse) road.

We decided to go up to a smaller peak (elevation 5306 feet) along the way. Decided to call it Haj peak. The lava rock patches are consistent all along but stable. From Haj, we descended in the gully and shrotly thereafter, climbed up the most gradual looking slope and on the ridge to Funeral peak. Once on the ridgeline, many false peaks appearances. Once at the bottom of Funeral peak, we decided to from left side and scramble up the rocks for about 5 minutes and then on to the top and a short walk to the peak and ammo box.

Awesome views all the way around. If you walk down towards the gully, you get good view of Sheep Canyon It was a leisurely pace. On the way back, we took the same way down and then stayed in the wash, with Haj to our left. Saw some petroglyphs at the end of the wash. If you start the hike and stay in the wash, you will see those petroglyphs at the very beginning. We were back at the car while it was still light, although sun had set.
