I went with my good friend, Brian Hansen, my two oldest sons (Joshua - 9, and Daniel - 8), and my dog Cody. We camped on a Friday night in Ophir canyon on the banks of the river. The next morning we hit the trail at 7:15 AM and walked up the 4x4 road to the saddle. Approaching the saddle below Lewiston, Josh collapsed and began to cry. I told him that we could go back and no one would think less of him. "But", I said, "if you decide to keep going, I'll be right behind you all the way." He dried his eyes, looked up at me and said "Let's do this." We summitted Lewiston around noon, and then made it to the Flat Top's peak at 1:00 PM. The hike back down was long and hot. The boys ran out of water on the way down, and we made it back to the bottom of the canyon road at about 6:00 PM. A long day, but one that changed my boys forever. I loved that hike.
