Emma's Peak (2460 m) Easy scramble
August 13 evening

I thought I'd make a slightly more detailed post, given there is little information about this bump that lies between Lawrence Grassi and Ship's Prow.

The hike up is very straightforward, and we essentially followed the way @Matthew Clay went up. There is no established trail up. This hike is relentlessly steep, with a very constant angle from bottom to top. The first third is an open forest with lots of moss, and lots of deadfall. They are mostly small trees, and easily stepped over. Very little bushwacking proper. The second third of the climb changes character: more solid footing, a few easy dealt or avoided altogether small rock bands, however more branches in your way. The last third is grassy slopes, with some rubble here and there.

When you get to the summit is where things will get interesting scramble-wise if you decided to continue towards Ship's prow. I was on Ship's Prow two weeks ago, and was curious as to how the descent looked, as you don't see the lower half very well due to a Pinnacle in the way. The descent to the col between the two is steep. The first 2/3 down is moderate scrambling, with somewhat solid rocks, large grassy ledges, and a bit of loose rocks. This is where we stopped, as our goal was not to continue. The last final third of the way down would qualify as a difficult scramble. It is steep, and can feel somewhat exposed. The rock is textured, from what we could see. However, rock fall is a real concern here. At the top of the little final gully sit a bunch of large loose rocks, aiming straight at you, and primed to go. Getting hit by a rock here would at best lead to serious injury (cracked helmet, broken arm), at worse death from falling. I would suggest 1) have your partners stay well above you as you go down, 2) likely it is possible to down climb on climber's right to a ledge, and then go in the gully, avoiding the loose rock altogether. Same precautions if going up: let your partner get well out of the way, and don't loiter at the base of the gully.

a nice evening scramble, 4:45 round trip, including dinner, pictures, exploring the descent, and saying hi to a beaver.
