Survived my first week at my new job, huzzah! Slept in later than I intended, but these things happen. Happily, the weather has cooled off one last time before the summer heat really starts baking us here in Phoenix, so even though I didn't hit the trail until >9:30 AM, there was a nice breeze and the temps never went above 80-83°F. That being said, there's a reason I had sun sleeves, sunglasses, a sun hat, and leggings on instead of shorts and a tank-top. There's absolutely *no shade* on this trail. I managed to get turned around twice - first when I started, I missed the little connector to the "C" (Circumference) trail from the big residential-area-connector path I was on. Oops! Worked my way up C til it hit a massive crossroads and jumped on to the "R" (Ridgeline) trail, followed that to the left/west as it wound its way uphill. From the saddle, which is the highest point the official trail reaches, I saw a faint use-trail from other peak-baggers and followed it south-east along the ridgeline to gain the actual summit. About went through the roof with shock when I crested the first outcropping of volcanic rock and found a human person... body... lying on the ground, their face covered by their shirt, not moving. ACK! No blood, no nothing, I think they were taking a nap. I jumped out of my skin and hurried on, and then felt guilty - what if they were in a state of medical distress? Alternatively, what if they were just lying there taking a nap...? So, as I scrambled and picked my way (class 3-ish along a quasi-knife-edge volcanic rock ridgeline) over to the actual summit, I thought about what to do, what to say. Stopped at the summit, took some pictures, and I was going to grab the geocache I saw (a medicine bottle inside a plastic water bottle with its top mostly cut off) BUT there was a teeny-tiny lizard in the bottle! So small - smaller than my pinky finger! Poor little lizard - I let him keep his safe "cave" and put it back. As I traipsed back toward the official trail, I made sure I was going to ask. The person was (probably?) asleep - I asked "are you here because you want to be here?" and "are you in a state of medical distress?" - and they mostly grunted and answered "yeah" and "fine"... I didn't see any blood or injuries... I let them be. They never showed their face. I hope that they're okay... Anyway, managed to get turned around once I got back on trail and started heading the wrong direction. OOPS. Caught myself after 20 feet, went back up the hill, and continued up and then down the R trail til it connected with the C trail again; followed that around back to the parking lot. Also scoped out where the parking area for the State Trust Land that nearby Pyramid Peak is on. Oh man, that is gonna be a super-duper Kevin-style "Shitty Desert Peak" if I ever saw one. (I also feel that Ludden Mountain will be similar). So, a nice jaunt, got my heart rate up, got some scrambling in, and stretched my legs after a long first week! Gotta enjoy the glorious weather this weekend before it becomes scorching...!
