Pinnacle Rd was closed beyond the Springs due to icy roads so we started our ascent from Collinsvale instead of the bend on kunanyi. We warmed ourselves by ascending through lush myrtle forest carved by swift waterfalls until the canopy thinned and the subtle papery correa flowers began to appear alongside spiny hakeas and fruiting waratahs. Currawongs were making a ruckus somewhere up the mountain at about the point a powdering of snow appeared at around 950m elevation. Slicks of ice every so often to keep us alert, particularly once we hit the wider East West fire trail. Thankfully the rock hop up to the summit of Collins Bonnet was more sure footed and easy to navigate with well marked poles. We shared the beautiful snowy summit with a dapper chap in a beret and denim shorts and marvelled at all of the 360 degrees of view on offer.
