Clingmans Dome is a very easy and scenic highpoint. The simplest way to summit the mountain is to drive there on a road that weaves through the Smoky Mountains; a great drive on a summer or autumn afternoon. This is the route that I took to the top and saw plenty of motorcyclists along the way (made me want to buy a motorcycle).
This hike can be done of people of all ages with there being a paved sidewalk that goes from the parking lot to the high point. At the highpoint itself is a nice overlook that takes you above the treeline. It is also part of the Appalachian Trail, so you may see some 'extreme hikers' along the way!

The road was the most memorable part of this trip. Seeing the mother bear and her three large cubs walk right in front of our car. I don't remember if the path was paved back then, but my husband thinks it was. I was too busy minding three young kids along the way to recall.
