"With R. Last portion of the climb was a bit sketchy both up and down with a young one. Otherwise beautiful. The Witchitas are holding onto a last bit of color but it will be gone soon." — danielmartin • Nov 11, 2023
"Went with R. Perfect weather and wonderful wildflower coverage after the recent rainy week. The trail needs maintenance and is starting to become overgrown shortly after reaching the peak base. This may not be a good climb after another week or two until the fall weather knocks back some of the vegetation. The ticks are already going crazy. " — danielmartin • Apr 30, 2023
"Nice day. Went to the aquarium with R and then hopped over for a quick hike up Little Baldy. The godforsaken heat has finally broken. One good rain and the Wichitas will be beautiful again before the onset of Winter." — danielmartin • Sep 25, 2022
"Did my normal Baldy run while out at the Refuge. It was oppressively hot today. Please do light hikes, wear sunscreen and bring a seemingly absurd amount of water with you while out of the Wichitas right now. The air temp was 100, and the rocks were hot enough to feel like they were pan frying my skin by 1500. Right now isn't the best for wildflower hunts or wildlife watching due to the heat. The views were delightful as always however." — danielmartin • Jul 2, 2022
"I would like to begin by saying do not take this route in case anybody is reading this. Do the normal AllTrails route that starts at the edge of the first pool you come too at the entrance to the narrows. I tried to use a boulder field further west to scramble to the top, and it was very difficult. It may not have been as bad during cooler weather, but the heat was so high (100F) today that the rocks were baking. It sapped my strength like you wouldn't believe. Anybody going out to the Refuge at the moment needs to plan better than I did, or just wait for cooler weather. The views along the route to the top are decent, and the summit has a really great panoramic sightline of the Wichitas. Honestly, Mt. Scott is probably a better climb while the heat is this severe. You have an established path that makes you go earlier during shared road usage, and there are plenty of people around to bail you out if you start showing signs of heat illness. Be safe out there! Pictures to come later." — danielmartin • Jul 2, 2022
