Hiked Capitan 9 months ago so it's not completely fresh in my mind but I'll give it a go...

Took Capitan Peak Trail starting at about 8am. The road to get to the trailhead is unpaved but 4wd is not needed. It was in disrepair and there was logs in a couple places that had to be moved. There is a village of about 10 houses just past the trailhead. You'll see the trailhead begin just to the left of the information sign.

There was about 6 inches of snow on the ground in several places when we climbed it, but it wasn't too difficult. We lost the trail towards the top of the mountain and went off the trail to get to the summit. Took about 5 hours going up and we didn't see anybody the entire time.
