I was staying at Garnet Hill Lodge for a couple days with my parents. The hike up here was a suggestion by the waiter at breakfast. Not being a hiker AT ALL at the time, I took off solo with one small bottle of water and two pieces of bread left over from breakfast, wearing sneakers. As I hiked up, I became concerned about bears possibly smelling the bread so I ate it early on in the hike. I got to the summit 4 hours later. It was beautiful, and the quality of the silence has made me always look for that same non-sound again. 3 hours going down, finally arriving back at the lodge in the dark, to very worried parents. It's not a big peak, but that day is one of my favorite memories and the hike that launched my love for hiking.
