Bern Peak is one of the smaller mountains within the Devils Backbone WSA. I did five mountains with Bern Peak being the first as part of a 10 mile loop. Other peaks in the area include Devils Backbone, Devil Benchmark, Peak 7305, Peak 6115, Peak 6770.
One main issue is getting to the area. The BLM website for the Devils Backbone WSA gives detailed instructions but some clarification is needed. Hikers exit off I-25 at exit 115, then take NM-1 north for about four miles to Frontage Road 2036 where you make a left, go under the interstate and meet what's called on maps, Kings Highway Rd, CR-124 or A40. NONE of those road labels are present on the ground nor are any signs present along the entire route that label any of the roads. The only sign is for frontage road 2036 which BLM instructions omit. "Kings Hwy Rd" is a decent narrow dirt/gravel road. The other roads are not bad but do have some rough area that may require a high-clearance vehicle. I provided a GPS road track to follow. The hike is straight forward, from the road, elevation about 5700 ft, the mountain is clearly visible and requires a walk across an open field and a steep ascent up the mountain. Elevation gain about 900'
