"From the car park at the lane-end at Penwyllt (SN 85479 15773), we passed the cavers' hut above the deepest caves in Britain and took a grassy track north-east to its highest point. A short ascent brought us onto the limestone pavement on Carreg Cadno, where a few scrambling moves were needed to stand on the highest point. After visiting the craggy east top too, we descended north to the wide cwm to pick up a grit track up the south ridge of Fan Gyhirych, visiting a strange sinkhole where a stream disappeared into the side of the hill. Leaving the track where it turned east, a faint path brought us onto the summit plateau. On our ascent the weather rapidly changed, as rain-clouds rolled in from the north-west, much altering the weather-mood for the rest of our hike. Circling the lip of Fan Gyrhirych's impressive northern cwm, the grit-track was regained again. A short ascent from the bwlch brought us onto the summit of Yr Allt. Continuing northwards down to a shallow bwlch, another short ascent followed to the trig point on the summit of Pen Bwlch Chywyth by a boggy pool.
