What can you say about Yerba Senta Butte? I’m assuming the hill was named after a couple of people (Mr. Yerba and Mr. Senta) or maybe a local native American tribe – I can’t imagine someone coming up with that name all on their own. But anyway, it was a nice little hike if you’re already in the area, but nothing to make a special trip to Payson for, in my opinion. My girlfriend and I started hiking south along the Cypress trail from Granite Dells Rd. until the butte was directly to the west of us. From there, I started bush-whacking up the slope until I hit a trail about 50 yards up the slope. Following the trail to the south it curved around the south end of the butte before heading up. At the top, there is an American flag and a nice view of the Mogollon Rim to the north and the steeper, Monument Peak to the east. Even though I was kinda swarmed with a bunch of love sick cicadas on the way back down, (which helped keep pace up), all in all, it was a nice hike. And the trail was surprisingly well maintained for a supposed “non-maintained” trail.
