"For this peak, I went out and camped out near the Agua Caliente Staging Area since it is BLM land. I figured instead of waking up early and driving all the way to woolsey peak the next morning, why not go the night before and have a nice camp closer to woolsey peak.
Now the road to the starting area in woolsey peak is not easy. So I called in a friend who I hadn't seen or hiked with in a while (since I last did Battleship Mountain!) and asked if he would be interested in doing this hike and also driving us to the start location. Luckily, he was very happy to join me and we put in his 4x4 high clearance vehicle to work. My small hybrid corolla could never even get close haha.
Once we found a solid starting area, it was time to get going. We parked close to what seemed like a road that led up to the base of the mountain. It was along a fence that kept cattle in so we just walked on that road until we reached the base and the fence ran out. From there, it was very straightforward. "Arizona P2K (28/73). Back to some good old off trail hiking. Really enjoyed this one and a peak that I had been wanting to do for a while now. Was also one of those peaks where you can see the entire route up, in short you just go up. Did step on a cactus and was thankful I had put a pair of pliers in my bag a couple months ago." — matty44m • Mar 25, 2023
"I could only make it 2.4 miles from Old Highway 80, so a 4 mile hike for the high clearance and 4WD crowd was a 14 mile hike for me. I wanted to make it up before the sun came up, but missed that by maybe 10 minutes. It was pretty windy higher up, but the views were great and the hike up was fun. The top was also beautiful with all the little cholla." — ZachTeich • Jan 15, 2022
"Road in definitely requires high clearance, at least for the last 3 miles. Looks tougher from below, the volcanic talus was quite stable and the cliff bands are easy class 2. Great summit views including a mini cholla garden on top. Complete TR: http://themtsarecalling.com/woolsey/" — Christopher • Jan 12, 2018
