"Tom2 and I did the Spruceton straight shot from Shaft road PA to the West Kill PA on Spruceton road. A brisk day temperature-wise to saunter over Sherrill, North Dome and West Kill with minimal fluffy/powdery snow on the ground. Saint Anne’s gets added as a bonus peak, sort of a speed bump on the way to West Kill. All day we switched from bare boots to micro spikes to snowshoes and back again. Snowshoes were mainly used to get up and over North Dome and West Kill. Descending ND toward the Devils Path was a royal PIA with the ‘shoes just sliding in the powdery snow on the many steep pitches. The spikes might have been better but I doubt it. Just need much more snow that is packable to fully enjoy snowshoeing.

"Spruceton Straight Shot with Tom R., Susan, Rebecca, Gala, Tom M. and Danielle. Traversed Sherrill, North Dome, St Anne’s and West Kill from Shaft road to the end of Spruceton road. Started off rather cool, low 40’s and wearing shorts, then gradually warmed up nicely causing layers to be shed. Late lunch break at Bucks Ridge view before the final long descent. Since the West Kill was low, do to a very dry late summer/early fall, we took a shortcut acrossed the Kill to the Diamond Notch trail. This cut out walking all the way up to the bridge at the falls only to cross the Kill and walk back down on the other side." — Nimblefoot • Oct 22, 2024
"Spruceton loop of 4- West Kill, SW Hunter, Hunter and Rusk. Traversed over the summit of East Rusk to get to the canister on Rusk. The herd path from the Spruceton trail over to Rusk is getting more and more obvious allowing for a swift traverse. On West Kill I earned day # 354 out of 366 for the 35R Everyday challenge." — Nimblefoot • Oct 7, 2024

"Devils Path Traverse East-to-West, with bonus miles up Hunter and SW Hunter, today June 8th. Azaleas in bloom along the eastern half of the range added a splash of color to the morning. A big, stoic bear lingered around Mink Hollow when we passed through. There’s great, flowing water just west of Mink Hollow at 42.13846, -74.16486, but this is the only reliable water on the eastern ridge until the spigot at Stony Clove Notch. The trail west of Stony passes many running sources right now, so no refill worries on that side. Hunter and SW Hunter were lively in the afternoon, so we didn’t linger. Mud was mostly minimal along the trail save for the regular culprit spots, like between Devils Acre and Geiger Point, and navigating these mini bogs was straightforward. Bugs were minimal until late afternoon when winds subsided, and the late-day feasters were largely of the mosquitoe variety. Nettles added a little extra discomfort to the trail, and they were particularly bad hiking out of stony clove towards Devils Acre. In general the trail seemed a bit brushier than usual throughout. Tick hitchhikers are a real concern right now. Check those crevices when you’re done with your hikes! 👀" — wacbravo • Jun 8, 2024
"Tony organized a Spruceton Straightshot which is a traverse of Sherrill, North Dome and West Kill. This turned out to be an all guys hike and it was a new hike for four of them, only Tom M. and myself have done it a number of times. We chose to go from Shaft road to Spruceton road so as to get the bushwhacking(herd paths) done first and finish at the view down below the summit of West Kill.
On our climb of Sherrill we kept hearing thunder in the distance which led to a light rain making us totally soaked by the time we reached the canister. Out came the rain jackets, to stay a little warmer, for our hike over to North Dome. By the the time we reached the next canister the rain let up and the sky lightened up so off came the jackets so they could ride in the packs for the remainder of the day.
Onto the dreaded bushwhack down to the Devils Path for a trail hike up to St Anne’s and all the way up to the West Kill sign( the cairn has been knocked over again). Some group photos with the sign then down to the view(Bucks Ridge) for more lunch/snacks and Doug to experience a new view after raising his peak total to 15 Cat 35s. We lucked out to have the rain in the AM then sunny for..." — Nimblefoot • May 23, 2024
"A twosie of Halcott in the am and Westkill in the pm with Dr. Smith. Nice to be able eat lunch in the warmth of the car going between THs when the temp is at 12*. Spikes on both peaks though snowshoes would have been a benefit on West Kill where a descending Can Man indicated their need as he grumpily passed us. On Halcott the crusty snow was great for plunge-stepping short cuts." — Nimblefoot • Jan 17, 2024
"Spruceton straight shot of West kill, Saint Anne’s, North Dome and Sherrill with Richard, Sherri, Kelly and Maple. Winter-like hike with about an inch white fluff on the ground. Micro spikes on and off all day. Sherrill completed my 60th round of the Cat35." — Nimblefoot • Dec 6, 2023
"Morning ascent of West Kill from Spruceton road followed by trail maintenance on my adopted section of the Diamond Notch trail. About 1/2 inch of white fluff on the ground at the higher elevations on the peak. " — Nimblefoot • Nov 15, 2023
"Richard, Pat, Susan and I pushed through the heat and humidity to visit the summit of West Kill in the morning. Fortunately we had a good breeze on the upper part of our climb to ameliorate the sweat fest. Back at the cars Pat treated us to cookies, fruit salad and cheese.
Both Susan and Pat headed home to take of family issues while Richard and I head out to Rt 42 to climb Halcott. Our fresh dry T shirts quickly became soaked with the even warmer temps and no breeze. Once back to the cars I decided against heading back to Spruceton road to climb Rusk mtn to finish the day. I had enough heat plus I had things to do on my way home." — Nimblefoot • Sep 6, 2023
"Nine of us hiked from the end of Spruceton road to Shaft road. It was nice to do the section of the Devils Path between the two peaks of West Kill, haven’t been through there in years. Fortunately the black flies were not a problem today as temps stayed on the cool side." — Nimblefoot • Jun 5, 2023
