10.7.2020, Wabayuma Peak, AZ, solo day trip. 7 miles, 1,400’ gain round trip Mtn bike, 6.5 miles, 2,300’ gain round trip on foot. This is a remote, challenging and rarely visited summit deep in the Wabayuma Wilderness in the Southern Hualapai Mtns. At the end, it has a class 4 summit block ascent that makes it even more difficult mentally and physically. In the last year and a half it’s only seen 2 sign-ins. It was tough doing is solo but I feel great satisfaction accomplishing it that way. There were fresh bear prints and scat that made me feel especially afraid but I soldiered on and never gave up. Not much shade and a late start (noon on the hike portion) with a high of 90 at the highest elevation created an optimal sufferfest that only a desert rat (such as myself) could find pleasurable. I had to hustle cattle out of my way on the way down the mountain road while on my bike. I just made cowboy/cattle drive sounds/shouts I remember seeing in old westerns and it worked! Lol I felt like a real cowboy but I had a bike instead of a horse. Great day. The Hualapai Mtns never disappoint.
