The climb takes about 3-4 hours in each direction. Possibly it could be done quicker if an optimal route could be worked out. I will write up a description of my suggested route for SOTA Watch. Briefly, the best way is to follow the canyon on the north side of the mountain as high as possible and then scramble up the rocks as best as you can. You will need to use your hands and being willing to do some boulder hopping. The summit is difficult to achieve thanks to the smooth granite faces and sudden drops. Once on top, you’ll be treated to some of the best views in Wichita Mountains. And lots of cactus. It was about 40 degrees F on top and somewhat windy. I decided to see if the south side of the mountain would be better for descending. It wasn’t. In fact, I strongly recommend avoiding that face of the mountain. At one point, I had to remove my backpack and push it ahead of me while I slithered on my stomach, if that tells you anything. As boulder strewn and clogged with trees as the northern route was, it was definitely better than the south side. By the way, this is not a dog friendly mountain.
