"Hiked along the road under a canopy of fall color. Spectacular beauty up and down the mountain. Very few cars. Epic sunset. The trail to both peaks is still open without No Trespassing signs. 8 total miles. Took an obnoxious amount of photos. " — runshigleyrun • Nov 5, 2025
"A late afternoon hike up the winding Twelve O'Clock Road outside of Salem, VA. The leaves were spectacular along with the temperature. The views from the top of the second peak are absolutely phenomenal. These are the peaks that dominate the skyline of Salem. It's a one-hour walk up the winding but forgiving switchbacks. Thankfully, cars are sparse and it's so quiet you can hear them arriving. The summit was once private property, but those signs no longer exist accept at the tower. " — runshigleyrun • Oct 30, 2024
"Finally, I walked up the long winding road, hopped off the pavement, and followed a rugged pipeline trail to the two peaks of Twelve O'clock. This mountain peers down into my classroom in Salem. In the past, there has been a gate with a "no trespassing" sign obstructing the dirt road. Lately, there has been nothing there, so game on. I never encountered a "No Trespassing" other than at the tower. The walk up is steep and narrow, but I only encountered a few cars either way. The views of the Roanoke Valley were scant, but the glimpses were magnificent. As I reached the peak, I was surrounded by storms, but no thunder or lightning thankfully. It feels remote and big on top. This is a phenomenal area of wilderness just outside the Poor Mountain Nature Preserve." — runshigleyrun • Jun 3, 2024
