"A short walk from the road takes one to steps that lead to an observation point that affords wide views south west to north west. Continued up track to highest point although not great views due to bushes." — vygodski • Jun 12, 2025
"One of several named peaks on the Gallipoli Peninsula that have a special significance in the battle between British and Commonwealth forces and the Ottomans during WW1. Baby 700 is so named because it is a lower rise next to Battleship Hill (which is approx 700ft.) This one has a cemetery and a statue commemorating the Turkish hero Mustafa Kemal, who turned the tide of the battle of Chunuk Bair.
Note, the Turkish name for this is Rakimli Tepe. Accesed by the road though paths through the battlefields exist." — vygodski • Jun 11, 2025
"Because the road goes over the top of this, and the shrub is high, it is quite hard to get a fix on this, described by British soldiers as a flat top. It got its name because it was an easy target for battleships. I don't think it should be confused with Chunuk Bair, which is not on peakery but a more significant peak further up the ridge. More prominent, but more significant historically because this is where New Zealand soldiers reached against all odds and held out before being relieved by other Anzacs. This is covered by the film Chunuk Bair. There are quite a few monuments on top of it and it holds a special place in Turkish history." — vygodski • Jun 11, 2025
"Things start to get a little confusing here. Hill Q is named after a grid reference and was briefly occupied by Ghurkas during the battle of Sari Bair. A track (once tarmac, now dirt and inaccessible to vehicles) passes below the most western rise and above the eastern one. One gets to it by walking through Chunuk Bair (where the two trench lines of the opposing armies are preserved, and astonishingly just a few feet from one another) and around, a track taking you up the first, the other more or less on the road. "Beyond Hill Q is the highest point of this part of the peninsula. Continue along the dirt track which dips with a deep gully on the north side. Then a track up the west side of this. This hill, I think, is sometimes confused with Chunuk Bair. The Anzac forces attempted to capture this but were beaten back. The terrain is unforgiving. Round concrete pillar and building on top, looks like they are building something here." — vygodski • Jun 11, 2025
