"3.22.2021~Tortoise Shell Peak trail Run/Scamper with my son Jimmy Jr. 4 miles, 1,200’ gain in 1:43hrs. We had a great after school break getting off the grid and enjoying this handsome peak that’s right near home in the Northern McCullough Range. The cool breezes and views or the surrounding Mtns were divine. " — paula.raimondi • Mar 22, 2021
"2.26.2021~Tortoise Shell Peak & Henderson City Highpoint w/Jimmy. 4.2 miles, 1,500’ gain in 2:22hrs. Nice late day outing. We had already ran and walked 7 miles from the Kia dealership to home earlier in the day so we were dead tired and slow AF. The trail makers have made a path up and over TSP so that was awesome. HCHP was lower on the ridge and a short side trip. Killer Views of Sin City. Cool winds blasted us up top.

"My first peak of the year, after recovering from minor knee surgery. This was my second summit of this peak and still my favorite. It's not too strenuous, or long a hike, but it's very satisfying, getting up over 3,700 feet altitude. Great views all around as well. Since my first summit of Tortoise Shell in 2017, the trail is easier to follow, since I assume more people have discovered this great hike! While I always keep a look out for snakes, when hiking in Southern Nevada, I have yet to see any. In this area I have seen plenty of lizards, quail and eagles." — GMan • Oct 5, 2019
"Just wanted a nice short hike with some climb to stretch our legs. Ended up sitting on the peak (well, just off of it - didn't want to be that close to the microwave tower...) and talking til the sun started to drop over the horizon, and then decided that the view of Vegas was so nice, why not wait for the sun to set and see the valley all aglow in its quilt of light? Came down in the dark, slipped a bit on the loose rock and gravel but no major injuries. The moon was bright enough that as soon as we got off the steep part, we didn't need our head lamps anymore. "This is my favorite hike to date in the Vegas Valley. I found the entrance to the Sloan Canyon area without really knowing what I'd find and set off hiking the trails, before deciding I was going up. At the time, the trail was very hard to follow (not many hikers saw this as a destination), and it was a none-to-easy hike. But it was very satisfying and the views from the summit are great, rivaled only by Black Mountain in the McCullough Range. The trail isn't as full of loose rock as others in the area, but bring plenty of water. " — GMan • Feb 16, 2017
"Nice Afternoon Hike to this Mountain just a few Miles from my Home. Surprised to have a relative good Path leading up to the Peak even occasional Cairns. Lots of Gravel and loose Stuff as well. Overall it is a Hike to recomend. Great View in every Direction!!" — Nuernberger • May 20, 2015
"Colleen and I did this summit the hard way from the abandoned plots near MacDonald Ranch on Horizon Ridge. One way along The Horizon Ridge-Ridge to the Peak then down to MHT trailhead for about 7miles. It was steep and loose to the summit from that direction. I call this Microwave Peak " — paula.raimondi • Feb 2, 2015
