"I started hiking this day at 9 Am, visited the stone canyon nature center, then went up the trail to Mt Lukens as I crossed by a cool oak and then crossed the stream which started the real climb as I climbed up many switchbacks, whcih provided nice views into the valley, gradually getting better as I climbed. I also pass the Redoubt, a windbreak area and then the trail was quite narrrow, and there was still great views throughout. Then eventually I got onto a firebreak and then the Mt Lukens road at Silver Saddle, where I saw mty first views into the interior San Gabes and then climbed up the summit fo Lukens, where I saw more views and some snow along the way. Then I went to the summit where I saw many antennas and some amazing views into the city of LA. Then I went past the summit and down to Haines Canyon, which was quite broring but provided some decent views. Then I went down the long fire road and the rim of the valley trail,w hcih had some amazinv views as I hiked down. Then eventually I reached my car again. " — lc444 • Mar 20, 2025

"This is my fourth summit of Mount Lukens, even though the last visit was 19 years ago. As far as I know, this was my first visit to The Redoubt, though. Each of the four times I did it in a different way. The first way was via Stone Canyon. The second way was via Haines Canyon. The third way was via Angeles Crest Highway and Mt Lukens Truck Trail. The fourth way involved Deukmeijian Wilderness Park. However, instead of descending via Dunsmore Canyon, I took the wide loop into Haines Canyon and concluded the hike with 2.5 miles of tranquil hillside community street walking. My phone died with 1.5 miles to go, so the GPX is incomplete, but it isn't difficult to piece the rest of it together. It was good to reconnect with portions of an old trail from the past. Hiking stats are: 14.1 miles and 3,297 feet of elevation gain." — MikeTeeples • Mar 20, 2021
