"started on a dirt road up to Arden. Then its all off trail along the ridge. The Fortress looks impossible to summit. but there is one way on south side. There was a cairn marking it. It was alot of class 3. " — derek-puraVida • Apr 2, 2023
"3.23.23~The Poop Fortress up from the East, Down the West for a 9.5 lollipop loop. 2,050 gain in 4:43hrs. I started at the MHTrails from the top of Sandy Rd and jogged and scampered to and fro. I spent a half hour contemplating wether to not go up because of the bee activity. I put on my jacket & hood to protect from stings. I forged ahead hoping for the best. I’m not allergic to bees but not sure how multiple stings would feel. All went well. There were pools of water in the falls below the Mtn. " — paula.raimondi • Mar 23, 2023
"What a traverse ! Most of it is quite loose rugged and unpleasant but the ridge definitely goes , quite easily at that. Didn’t encounter anything harder than class 3 (up and around the fortress) . Phone died on the way back so add an extra 5-6 miles on the return. I drew a line on the final summit push on fortress as it may look intimidating at first , it is real easy getting up there. "1.19.2023~Arden to Poop Mtn (aka The Fortress) traverse, North McCullough Range, Sloan Canyon. 10 miles, 2,400’ gain, Anthem to Henderson in 5:05hrs. Could have been faster but the route was miserable, I had to take a call mid hike and I made horrible shoe choice that had me in pain. 1st time doing this traverse. I made some mistakes and plan to redo it with a cleaner route. It started a sunny day and ended a rainy day. Beautiful rugged route." — paula.raimondi • Jan 20, 2023
"Started at Anthem East / Crescent Heights Ave. Headed up past AE HP to Arden Peak, traversed down the NE ridge to Peak 4055, down the east ridge (short class 3 obstacle) and up to The Fortress. Was planning to climb down the NE ridge of The Fortress but it looked pretty hairy, never been there before and didn't feel comfortable doing it solo so went back down the main chute on the west side and then up the ridge to Peak 3920 (more class 3 that can be avoided, one of the holds broke under my foot but thanks to 3 points of contact didn't fall!). All in all an AWESOME day hiking after a long lazy vacation in Brian Head. Beautiful weather. Recorded a low temp of around 25 at Peak 4055 and found a few small ice tanks on the rocks from yesterday's rain. Oh and a pretty cool lava rock arch coming down from Arden, unusual sights for McCullough! Just me on the trail, a mountain biker past me twice on the "pandemic" trail (is that new lol?) it's the one near the wash that leads to Fortress. And a small plane flying low and slow below the top of Rattlesnake. On the AE trail back to car looked over at Shadow Canyon and counted 13 cars at BM TH not including the parking lot that ..." — DudeAlmighty • Mar 16, 2021
"2.23.2021~The Fortress, (aka Poop Mtn) Solo, 10.5 miles, 2,000’ gain, 4:13hrs. Nearly 8 miles of trail running and 3 miles of Mountaineering. I ran on trails and trekked in gullies to the Eastern side of the Fortress summit. This ascent route has creepy exposed tiers and ledge passageways with loose rock but was mostly class 2+ with a few short class 3~3+ parts. I spent time preening rocks off ledges and setting up cairns along my route so I can use this nice route in the future. I descended the Western side and ran Pandemic back to Henderson. I enjoyed the warmth today and worried the rattlesnakes would wake to sun themselves, but luckily I didn’t encounter any. Catching a breeze here and there gave relief from the heat. I drank 27 ounces of water and ate a single bun, Wendy’s Chicken Sammie. Fun route. https://youtu.be/XdTewCA-ThI" — paula.raimondi • Feb 23, 2021
"Fortress Mtn. Summit. Harlan took me to Fortress Summit today. I’ve tried to do this peak twice before but I was stumped as to how to handle the final approach. It’s loose volcanic rock also so it’s very intimidating. I wasn’t real confident but I kept moving forward and eventually we were on top! It’s the only Summit I had left to do in the Northern McCullough Range. We jogged back and completed the 9 mile, 2,000’ ish gain route in 3:54hr including summit snack and break. Thanks again Harlan!" — paula.raimondi • Jan 19, 2018
