" A complete traverse attempt of Surry mountain (in less than 4 hours of daylight) We started on the far south end of the mountain which was highlighted by an extreme encounter with a large mama black bear climbing out of huge pine tree. I heard it's claws ripping up the tree bark from around a corner, thinking it was a porcupine I ran toward it, hoping to get a picture. As I rounded the corner and was about 20 feet away I noticed mama hanging to the bottom of the tree, looking right at me! Then I realized she had two cubs higher in the tree and I wasn't but a few yards from her!! So, at that point my friends and I ran about 25 ft more around a corner as to give ourselves some space between the mama. We didn't hear or see anything after that. The tow cubs had slid down the tree, following mama while we made our retreat and must've hunkered down in some thick vines we couldn't see into. We think there might've been an other cub already on the ground, which would explain why mama decided to slide down the tree when she realized we were so close.
