"With 1-2' of fresh snow in Tahoe, I went instead to the Southern Sierra to hike some HPS peaks. The objectives for the day were Bohna and Sunday, two peaks near Lake Isabella. I started from Cedar Creek CG and fought through some brush before things opened up. The area was very badly burned by the 2016 Cedar Fire and has not shown much sign of recovery; almost every tree was dead and there were downed trees and debris littering the forest floor. There was snow cover almost from the start, but I only needed the snowshoes above 7000ft where the snow was still very powdery. I found the Bohna register on the rocky south summit - a class 3 scramble. The weather was pretty nasty at the summit of Sunday Peak - freezing cold, windy, no visibility, so I didn't stay long and made my way back to the highway along muddy fire roads and OHV trails." — klotito • Mar 20, 2021
"If you like stupidly steep cross-country, then Bohna Peak and Sunday Peak make a great combination. Rancheria Road was still closed for the winter, so I was forced to start much lower in Cedar Creek Campground. Follow the creek up canyon for about a third of mile past some interesting mining tunnels and past two waterfalls before heading up a "use trail" through the brush. The trail isn't; but the good part is the brush goes quickly before gaining the east ridge of Bohna. This whole area burned in the 2016 Cedar Fire; there are tons of downed trees, limbs, and debris everywhere. But, the good news is that the bushes are gone too, so the on the whole the navigation is pretty obvious. If in doubt, go up.
Bohna's true summit is a short scramble to a great view. From Bohna up to Sunday is a long haul over two depressingly big drops to intermediate saddles followed by a long climb up and around the west ridge. I hit snow about half a mile from the summit at 7800'. The view from the top was excellent - from the desert peaks near Mount Owens, up to the Whitney area and across to the Mineral King zone. Still lots of snow in the higher reaches of the southern parts of the Sierr..." — edg • Apr 27, 2019
