Sugarloaf Peak is in the eastern part of the Gila National Forest south of the village of Winston. To get there, exit I-25 north of TorC onto NM-52, heading towards Cuchillo. In Winston, turn onto Republic Road towards Chloride and Hermosa; follow the "ST CLOUD MINE" signs since the forest road you want, FR-157, is directly across from the mine. The road to St Cloud mine is wide and well graded as the mine is active and trucks haul their loads, Winston zeolite, from the mine to Winston. You can find samples, chunks of white rock, along the road. Pick up forest road 157 (called C003 on most maps) taking it to a signed FR-4146T which is HC 4WD. FR-157 was in good condition due to a recent road grade, but is narrow and has some rough sections. From the end of 4146T follow the drainage/cattle trails to the foot of the mountain. Some scrambling required. The narrow summit ridge makes for great views.
